Infrastructure - Is your firm ready for an attack against its cabling infrastructure?

As the first related story illustrates with graphics, we have chosen to build our infrastructure on something that can be considered as being unreliable, namely the Internet.

At the same time, in contrast to a homeowner's concern regarding the design and looks of her Bang and Olufsen stereo in the living room, cabling infrastructure is usually neither part of the firm's entrance hall nor does the user care much about how it works or looks.

In contrast, if the network should not operate properly all users are concerned and want it up again working 100% the faster the better.

This set of slides in pdf outlines:

- what has made the Internet less reliable

- how could this affect the network's stability and reliability, and

- how can the above factors be considered when offshoring and outsourcing certain core IT and other operation activities.

The presentation shows that without careful planning and design of the infrastructure (e.g., building & construction, network redundancies, etc.), the firm has to absorb certain risks that it is willing to take or else wants to get rid off.

Minimizing and optimizing these risks regarding the cabling infrastructure requires certain decisions, investments and implementations that will be outlined (related link).
