Holding Greece hostage with a cryptovirus NOT

ICTsecurity 2006 Athens - Greece being flooded with cryptoviruses while we talk about awareness raising

This presentation was given at the ICTsecurity 2006 meeting held at the Greek Ministry of Transports and Communications on 2006-06-01 (see first link for more info). During this meeting various issues were addressed, in particular the challenge with:

- critical infrastructure

- protection of citizens' rights

- European efforts regarding regulation and collaboration in early alert work and

- what Greece should do considering its mobile scandal (see related Ericsson and Vodafone story)

This presentation outlined some of the well kown technical challenges faced by enterprises, such as:

- having workers not focusing on security, or

- being careless and

- improving prevention for home PCs and small businesses with non-techncial alerts and guides as well as tools.

The two biggest challenges regarding these issues are:

- globalization of the threat and

- lack of prevention at home whereby the result could be Holding Greece hostage (see 2nd link)

In particular, whilst Greece is discussing these issues, the danger and risk level of threats causing damage to the infrastructure seem to be increasing.

One particular concern raised by Minister Michael Lipsis is that unless a culture of security can be maintained, e-government efforts and e-commerce ones will be stifled in Greece.

Unfortunately, what seems to be happening and as put nicely into words by Mr. Yannis Alavanos, putting such efforts into practice is Greece's challenge that must be tackled quickly.

This presentation outlines some of these challenges and how Greece could accelerate its efforts (2 link).

Information security & citizen‘s rights: It‘s a journey not a destination - If we are not careful the country could be held hostage - Where are Greek citizens in all this, have we talked to them? Presentation given at the Electronic Communications - How safe are they? ICT security 2006 conference in Athens, Greece.

TIDBIT

One attendee pointed out that as suggested by some experts at the conference, prescriptive-rules OR REGULATIONS are not being followed by citizens. Accordingly, their usefulness should be questioned.

As well, while the world experienced to severe red-type alerts regarding Windows and Word vulnerabilities, Greek users were not informed about this and the danger that this might cause to their information, privacy and so on.

It seems that Greece has begun with an important effort to improve trust, confidence but much remains to be done. Starting the work today will help Greece to embark on a challenging journey. Continue to discuss the matter will increase the risk of the country being held hostage by hackers or as bad, having its citizens' computers being part of bot-networks that raise havoc. Both options do not make us sleep better at night, unless talk is followed by rapid action.
